NUEVO SISTEMA GENERA ENERGÍA A PARTIR DEL AGUA DE RED

Although hydroelectric technology is a tried-and-true method for generating power worldwide, scientists are keen on continually improving the technology.

The latest innovation, created by Hong Kong-based researchers, uses water flowing through water mains as a power source.

Researchers from The Hong Kong Polytechnic Universityand the Water Supplies Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government are jointly working on technology designed to extract power from water mains.

water main is an underground pipe used to convey water in a distribution system to consumers.

The system reportedly has two key components — an external hydroelectric generator and a spherical water turbine — that, in combination, are able to produce electricity. The turbine is immersed into flowing water and, as the water in the main passes through the turbine, it drives a central rotating shaft and a micro generator, producing electricity.

The eight-bladed turbine is specifically designed “to extract more energy from flowing water” while not reducing or interrupting the water’s flow. Its central shaft is hollow, which the researchers say minimizes energy losses while continuing to drive the generator and harvest as much energy as possible from the flowing water.

In a university press release, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University researchers say they “made the water more energetic and produced a strong current with a special metal block placed at the centre of the pipe to compress and accelerate the water flow. To further protect our drinking water, the turbine does not have moving parts and does not need any lubricant to eliminate the slightest change of contamination.”
